
Hiromi YANO

Former Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of Japan to the WTO in Geneva, former legal advisor at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of the Japanese government
Mr. Hiromi YANO was born in Tokyo in 1960.
After graduating from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tokyo, he joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI, later renamed as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)) of the Japanese government in 1983. His various postings in METI include legal advisor at the Minister’s Secretariat and at the International Trade Policy Bureau. He served as Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of Japan to the WTO in Geneva from 1998 to 2002, during which time he served as chairman of the Committee on Information Technology Agreement and vice-chairman of the Subsidies Committee.
He worked at the WTO Secretariat (Rules Division) between 2003-2025. During his time at the WTO, he served as Committee Secretaries of the Safeguards Committee, of the Anti-circumvention Informal Group (of the Anti-Dumping Committee), and of the Committee on the Plurilateral Agreement of Trade in Civil Aircraft. He has also worked on numerous disputes concerning subsidies, safeguards, and anti-dumping.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
