Former Ambassador of Chile to the World Trade Organization
Sofia Boza is an associate professor in the Department of Rural Management and Innovation and the Institute of International Studies at the University of Chile. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics (Honors) from the University of Seville, a professional title in Commercial Engineering from the University of Chile, a master’s in Economic Development and Public Policies, and a PhD in Economics from the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Her areas of specialization are agrifood policy and governance, food markets, and international trade, with over fifty academic publications in peer-reviewed journals and books. She has been a visiting fellow at the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, as well as an expert instructor at the Institute of Food Laws and Regulations at Michigan State University. She has participated in numerous research projects and studies funded by the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development, the Chilean Foundation for Agricultural Innovation, the Chilean Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies, and the Ministry of Social Development of Chile. Additionally, her work has been supported by the Secretariat of State for Education, Research and Innovation of Switzerland, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, among others.

She has been a member of the Board of the Chilean Association of Agricultural Economists and the Ibero-American Network for Development Studies. At the University of Chile, she co-created and coordinated the Group of Studies in Agricultural Policy and Development, the Sustainable Agrifood Systems Laboratory, and the Chair of Family Farming and Food.

From July 2022 to March 2026, Sofía Boza served as the Ambassador of Chile to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the International Trade Centre (ITC). During her tenure, she co-coordinated the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement at the WTO. In 2023, she chaired the WTO Working Group on Trade and Technology Transfer, and in 2024, she chaired the WTO Council for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. She also chaired the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) at WIPO, UNCTAD, and the WTO, and participated in the UNCTAD16 Preparatory Committee.
